Summer 2016 Intern Program

Interns in both Rockville, MD and La Jolla, CA participated in our summer 2016 internship program at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI). A total of 19 interns were hired for the summer 2016 program, selected from 578 applicants. Of the 19 interns, six interns were part of the Genomic Scholar Program (GSP) that is a transition program focusing on the leap from a community college to a four-year college using a combination of activities including undergraduate research experience with mentoring and professional development. The interns were mentored by JCVI faculty and research scientists. Mentors design a research project for each intern depending on their education and prior research experience.

The involvement of fellows in individually focused research projects was designed to stimulate interest in biomedical research as well as to develop independent critical thinking and communication skills with other team members. In addition to research activities, throughout the summer interns participated in professional development activities that included: education on the importance of documenting research activities and maintaining accurate laboratory records, responsible conduct of research, the art of reading scientific literature (interns participated in weekly science journal clubs that aimed to teach how to dissect and interpret scientific literature), and scientific presentations. All the interns participated in JCVI internal presentations and presented their summer research as a poster.

2012 JCVI Internship Program Is Now Accepting New Applications

Wow! Another year has gone by. Its hard to think it is November - almost December with the warm weather we have been enjoying. However it did not start that way.

The 2012 JCVI Internship Program is open to accept spring and summer applications. The application process includes the submission of a resume, essay and transcripts as one PDF file via our online application site. We no longer require letters of recommendation.

For summer 2011, we received 544 applicants. Of these applicants, 30 Interns were selected (10 in San Diego and 20 in Rockville):

  • 7 high school students
  • 9 undergraduate students
  • 13 graduate students
  • 1 secondary teacher

The intern projects ranged across the Institute:

  • A lethal set of virulence factors in uropathogenic E. coli ?
  • Expanding genome transplantation: Streptococcus thermophilus
  • Random Assembly for Use in Swapping as a Tool for Genome Minimization
  • Assembling terminators and promoters
  • Developing Galaxy Tools for the Ordination Analysis of Meta-genomic samples

Hopefully this winter, we won’t be hit with two MAJOR snow storms in Maryland that shut all the schools, the federal government and JCVI down for several days the week applications were due! I don’t think they are calling for much snow this year in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Of course, that is not a problem for our colleagues in San Diego.

2010 Internship Program Ready to Go

Are you thinking about summer already? We are!! The 2010 Summer Internship Program is open to accept applications. Last year, we received and reviewed over 300 applications from all over the US and the world for our summer program. Interns were selected to work in most of the research groups throughout the Institute: 18 interns were selected in San Diego and 37 selected in Maryland.

This year we had ten high school students, one high school teacher, and several undergraduate and graduate students in our intern group. The group made individual presentations to JCVI scientists and staff who were all quite impressed with the level of these presentations given their short time with us. The interns in both our East and West coast locations also had a unique opportunity this year to discuss their projects directly with Dr. Venter.
